Hulme Arch

Join Brian Duguid on a walking tour of Manchester’s most interesting bridges the morning after the Future of Design North 2015 conference. After meeting at the Museum of Science and Industry Update: See below for meeting details, Brian will start the tour with the Hulme Arch Bridge and work his way through to the city centre sharing his knowledge and opinions of some of Manchester’s notable contemporary bridges. The tour will then continue to Salford Quays where there will be a buffet lunch before finishing with a tour of the bridges in the quays.

All food and travel will be included in the cost. Tickets are limited to the first 30 customers.

Approximate schedule:

09:15 – Meet at the entrance to the Museum of Science and Industry

09:30 – Taxi/bus to the Hulme Arch to begin the tour of Manchester’s bridges
12:00 – Tram to Salford Quays
12:30 – Lunch in Salford QuaysHulme Arch
14:00 – Finish tour of Salford Quays bridges

The total walking distance will be no more than 5 miles.

Details are subject to final confirmation. However the tour is anticipated to include the following structures: Hulme Arch (Wilkinson Eyre / Arup); Mancunian Way Footbridge (Arca Architects / Kingfisher); Merchants Bridge (whitbybird); Spinningfields Footbridge (Ramboll); Trinity Footbridge (the only Santiago Calatrava structure in Britain); Corporation Street Footbridge (Hodder & Partners / Arup); Lowry Lift Bridge (Mouchel Parkman / Carlos Fernandez Casado); Media City Footbridge (Wilkinson Eyre / Ramboll).

Brian DuguidBrian Duguid Profile

Brian is Bridges Practice Leader at Mott MacDonald. His experience is across all types of bridge engineering consultancy and he is currently lead engineer responsible for civil and multi-disciplinary engineering on the Network Rail Northern Hub project. He has a keen interest in footbridge design, and bridge design competitions, having contributed to development of IABSE’s Guidelines for Bridge Design Competitions.

Brian is also on the IABSE British Group Executive Committee and an Honorary Lecturer at University of Manchester, where he lectures on bridge engineering as well as acting as an industrial mentor for student design groups.
