SUMMARY:IABSE Visits - Clifton Suspension Bridge Tour
DESCRIPTION:The British Group of IABSE is organising an afternoon tour of Clifton Suspension Bridge\, which will be led by the Bridgemaster Trish Johnson and John Rees of COWI. Delegates will learn how the difficult balance of preserving the bridge’s heritage whilst maintaining current functional and maintenance standards has been achieved on this awe-inspiring bridge across the Avon Gorge\, designed by I.K. Brunel and completed in 1864. The visit will proceed from the Visitor Centre on the Leigh Woods side of the bridge\, cross the bridge to the Clifton side and then back to the hidden chambers in the Leigh Woods abutment. \nThe Bridgemaster very rarely conducts tours as a matter of course and only in special circumstances. In leading the tour she will be joined by John Rees\, who is Project Director for COWI’s long-term commission as Engineer to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust. In their capacity as ‘tour guides’ they are able to provide delegates with unique engineering insight that is not available to the public. \nIABSE British Group are grateful to the Bridgemaster Trish Johnson and John Rees of COWI for generously giving their time to act as tour guides for this visit. Further details on the tickets for the visit are available here.
