SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture 2026: Lucas Epp
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 IABSE Annual Lecture will be given by Lucas Epp of StructureCraft. \n\n\n\nDesign + Build\, Reconnected\n\n\n\nDesign and construction have bifurcated.  What might buildings look like if we returned to shaping natural materials in their rawest form? Designers and builders\, reunited in the pursuit of efficiency and beauty amid an increasingly code-constrained\, risk-averse era. \n\n\n\nLucas Epp\n\n\n\nVice President & Head of Engineering\, StructureCraft \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLucas Epp is a structural engineer whose work sits at the intersection of architecture\, engineering\, and craft. His work advances timber and natural materials as primary\, high-performance structural systems – from mass timber to long-span\, free-form geometries. He has pioneered modern all-wood structural systems and joinery techniques at the new National Performing Arts Centre in Barbados and the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas\, blending ancient craft with state-of-the-art computational design and robotics – and opening new possibilities for timber architecture.  \n\n\n\nIn 2021 he founded Branch\, an in-house software venture creating the next generation of digital tools for structural design-to-manufacture\, informed by direct feedback from engineers\, fabricators\, and field crews.  Epp has practiced across the UK\, New Zealand\, China\, the United States\, and Canada. He has taught at ETH Zurich\, the Architectural Association\, and MIT; serves on Canadian and American timber code committees; and has authored multiple industry guidelines. His practice points toward a near future in which structural engineering\, fabrication\, and software merge – a return to the master builder mindset.  \n\n\n\nDinner \n\n\n\nImmediately following Lucas’ lecture\, please join us for the IABSE Annual Dinner at Bellanger (9 Islington Green\, The Angel London N1 2XH). \n\n\n\nWe are delighted that the Annual Dinner will be sponsored by Teufelberger-Redaelli\, continuing their long association with the IABSE British Group. \n\n\n\n\nbook tickets

SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture 2025: Catherine Ramsden
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 IABSE Annual Lecture will be given by Catherine Ramsden of Useful Studio. \n\n\n\nThrough the redline\n\n\n\nBy consistently looking through and beyond the narrow remit of the redline\, a binding project boundary\, we can reach indirect\, and even unknown\, benefits and outcomes while better responding to critical aspects that disregard edges such as light\, air and time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Ramsden (Founding Director\, Useful Studio)\n\n\n\n\nCatherine founded Useful Studio in 2013 and directs the practice while also having served as Deputy Chair on the Board for the wider Useful Simple Trust. The Studio is an award-winning B Corp and Social Enterprise with Catherine being actively involved in both\, serving as Co-Chair of the B Corp Built Environment Group. With significant experience across architecture\, urbanism and in public realm including footbridges\, her lean design approach and social purpose is fuelled by a passion for efficiency and positive impact. \n\n\n\nThe early years of her career focussed on planning and urban design working in California on significant environmental projects including strategic masterplans for Mission Bay and Balboa Park in San Diego as well as a townscape scheme for Santa Cruz. During a decade at Foster + Partners\, as Associate Partner\, Catherine’s key projects included Albion Riverside affordable housing with the Peabody Trust\, the Millennium Bridge and the Thomas Deacon Academy. \n\n\n\nHer first degree in Environmental Design was at the University of Colorado\, Boulder and she has a Masters of Architecture\, Magna cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania. Her education also included a year in Copenhagen. \n\n\n\nCatherine is an external examiner and lectures regularly in schools and universities. She is a member of the National Highways Strategic Design Panel. \n\n\n\n\nbook tickets\n\n\n\n\nDinner\n\n\n\nSponsored by Teufelberger-Redaelli \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImmediately following the Catherine’s lecture\, please join us for the IABSE Annual Dinner which will take place at the Swan on Bankside with a balcony overlooking the river\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge.  (21 New Globe Walk\, Bankside\, London SE1 9DT) \n\n\n\n\nbook tickets\n\n\n\n\nTicket sales for the dinner close on May 15th 2025.

SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Annual Lecture will be given by Ted Zoli (HNTB)\, who is joining us from the USA. \n\n\n\nAdaptation and the practice of bridge design in North America\nAs bridge design practice continues to evolve\, it is useful to ask how well-adapted we are; and where change may be both necessary and wise. As bridges are somewhat unique in the built environment\, with the goal of connecting public investment with public good\, it is necessary that we do this regularly. Yet change happens slowly and incrementally. \n\n\n\nBoth change and status quo are not without risk. The weight of past practice\, established design codes and standards\, and an industry well-tuned to existing workflows are important barriers to consider. Aspects of adaptation and how it has influenced in the design of built bridges in North America will be discussed. The role of the designer\, and more importantly the built work\, as a mechanism for needed change will be highlighted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTed Zoli\n\n\n\n\nTed Zoli serves as the technical director of HNTB’s bridge practice. He has led the design of numerous innovative first-of-their kind bridges\, including the network arch Lake Champlain Bridge (NY\, VT); the gusset-less truss for Portsmouth Memorial Bridge (ME-NH); the hybrid cable stayed Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge (MA); the first major network arch in the country\, the Blennerhassett Island Bridge (WV-OH); and the first double curved cable stayed bridge in the U.S.\, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge (NE-IA). Zoli also currently serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia University. In 2009\, Zoli was made a MacArthur Fellow; and in 2012\, he was selected as ENR’s Award of Excellence winner\, considered the U.S. construction industry’s most prestigious honour. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nDinner \n\n\n\nSponsored by Teufelberger-Redaelli \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImmediately following the Ted Zoli’s lecture\, join us for dinner aboard HMS Belfast and experience 1940’s life on board this restored cruiser. Welcome drinks will be served from 8pm\, followed by a superb seasonal 3-course dinner at 8.30pm in The Ship’s Company Dining Hall\, where you will be seated amongst the warship’s original features. \n\n\n\nYou will have the opportunity to explore the museum and watch the sunset on the Quarter Deck whilst enjoying views of London Bridge and Tower Bridge. \n\n\n\nHMS Belfast is a short walk from London Bridge Station. \n\n\n\n\nBook tickets

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture and Dinner 2023
DESCRIPTION:Ben Addy – Moxon Architects\n\n\n\nThe IABSE British Group Annual Lecture 2023 will be given by Ben Addy of Moxon Architects. The lecture will be held at the IStructE headquarters. Join us to learn why “no-one should be interested in the design of bridges”. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will be followed by the IABSE British Group Annual Dinner\, which will take place at the Compton in Clerkenwell\, a short walk from the IStructE. \n\n\n\nTickets are available here: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNo one should be interested in the design of bridges\n\n\n\nIn 20 years of practice\, architect Ben Addy has consistently returned to Cedric Price’s 1972 provocation: “No one should be interested in the design of bridges – they should be concerned with how to get to the other side.” \n\n\n\nToday\, in the context of climate change and the ecological crisis\, Ben Addy explains why the design of bridges is integral to the bigger picture. \n\n\n\nPresenting his working methodology through a wide range of Moxon Architects’ projects – from bridges and infrastructure to buildings and public space – Ben Addy explains how the principle of doing more with less informs all of his architecture and why an engineering sensibility is critical in addressing some of the challenges in today’s world. \n\n\n\nBen Addy\n\n\n\nBen Addy is the founding Director of Moxon Architects. He is an award winning architect with experience across sectors and particular expertise in projects involving the creation of new public infrastructure. Having established Moxon in 2004\, he has cultivated a reputation for technical achievement\, aesthetic versatility and an inquisitive\, collaborative design process.

SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture 2022
DESCRIPTION:Tina Vejrum – Record Spans from Stonecutters to Canakkale\n\n\n\nThe IABSE British Group Annual Lecture 2022 will be given by Tina Vejrum\, President-elect of IABSE. The lecture will be held at the IStructE headquarters. Join us for an incredible insight into Tina’s work on cutting edge long span bridges. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will be followed by the IABSE British Group annual dinner that will take place on a boat cruise while the Thames River. A three-course meal and drinks will be served. \n\n\n\nTickets are available here: \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRecord Spans from Stonecutters to Canakkale\n\n\n\nConnecting people and communities with efficient infrastructure is a fundamental basis for ensuring the future prosperity and development of our societies. Respect for resources and environment\, as well as the assessment of the effects of climate change\, are important considerations in developing sustainable solutions. \n\n\n\nPresenting personal favourite bridges and using examples from her own career as a bridge engineer\, Tina’s talk will feature record bridges like Stonecutters in Hong Kong and the new world record\, the 2023m main span 1915 Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey which opened for traffic in March 2022. \n\n\n\nOn the Ferry Free E39 project in Norway\, the conditions are so challenging that technology from many different areas needs to be combined in innovative ways. One of the solutions to overcome constructing foundations on more than 500m of water depth is to adopt floating structures to support the roadway. \n\n\n\nDuring the presentation Tina will reflect on synergies between a career as a bridge engineer and being involved in the activities in IABSE. \n\n\n\nDr. Tina Vejrum\n\n\n\nDr Tina Vejrum is Vice President in COWI responsible for major international bridge projects. Starting her career as a structural engineer on the Great Belt Fixed Link in Denmark\, she has been involved in major bridge projects all over the world. A highlight in Tina’s career as a bridge engineer is the record span Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong – a project she worked on for 10 years from the design competition through detailed design and concluding with three years on site during construction. Today she is heading COWI’s international team of bridge designers working on some of the largest and most complex bridges in the world. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, Tina is active in a number of professional associations. Notably the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) with over 2\,800 members in more than 100 countries where she currently the President-Elect.

SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture 2019 and Thames Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis Year’s IABSE Annual Lecture is a special one; we’ll firstly be treated to a Lecture by Guy Nordenson\, entitled “What We Do”\, followed by dinner aboard a boat on the Thames! \n“What We Do”\, Guy Nordenson \n“This then is the engineer’s principal destructive weakness\, to play Iago to the architect\, or indeed to another engineer\, Othello.” – Peter Rice 1992 \nThe role of the structural engineer today bears similarities to that diagnosed by Peter Rice near the end of his far too brief career\, but it has also changed. Since the early 1990s with the emergence of the World Wide Web and the digital transformation of work and play\, we have seen engineers from Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg disrupt commerce and culture. \nThese are today’s equivalents of the Victorian entrepreneur-engineers Isambard Brunel and Gustave Eiffel. \nThe necessary adaptation of our planet to the changing climate – regardless of even the most radical future mitigation measures – will require physical transformations comparable in scale to the recent digital revolution\, and the earlier Industrial Revolution. It is clear that engineers will need to play a leading role in that adaptation revolution\, and not that of Iago or Othello. \nGuy Nordenson is a structural engineer and professor at Princeton University. Recent projects include the Kimbell Art Museum\, the Menil Drawing Center and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Since 2008 he has led research projects on coastal resilience and climate adaptation and co-written three books on the subject: On the Water|Palisade Bay (2010)\, Structures of Coastal Resilience (2018) and Four Corridors (2019). Nordenson has co-curated exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art including “Tall Building” (2004) and “Rising Currents” (2010) and published Tall Buildings (2003)\, The Felix Candela Lectures (MoMA 2008) and Structured Lineages: Learning from Japanese Structural Design (2019). He was awarded the AIA’s Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement Award\, was Bernoudy Fellow at the American Academy in Rome and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 2006 to 2015 he was Commissioner of the NYC Public Design Commission and is a currently member of the NYC Panel on Climate Change. \nAfterwards\, for those that would like to\, we’ll be boarding a private boat at Westminster Pier. The trip is kindly sponsored by Trimble\, and we’ll be having dinner\, drinks and\, taking in the sites of the Thames. We’ll also be having informal (and quick!) talks on some of London’s bridges as we pass underneath. For those that can’t make the lecture\, feel free to buy a ticket just for the boat\, and meet us at the pier. \nThe three-hour cruise includes dinner\, drinks\, and should provide plenty of opportunity for networking\, discussion and catching up with friends and colleagues. \nThe timetable looks like this: \n5.30pm – Lecture by Guy Nordenson @ IStructE\, (NOTE EARLIER START!) \n7.00pm – Depart IStructE (transport provided) \n7.45pm – Boat Departs @ Westminster Pier\, ‘City Cruises’ \n11.00pm – Boat Returns to Westminster Pier \nLook forward to seeing you there! \nRegister now on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:2015 Annual Lecture and Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Each year the IABSE British Group has been holding an Annual Lecture. This important and hugely popular lecture is always given a high profile by the invited speaker\, often from overseas. The history of the Annual Lecture can be found here. \nThe 2015 Annual Lecture will be given by Mike Schlaich. He is Professor for Structural Engineering chairing the Department of Conceptual and Structural Design at Technische Universität Berlin and a Partner of Schlaich Bergermann und Partner. \nMore information regarding the annual dinner will be available soon. \n\n\nMike Schlaich worked in Spain as a structural engineer before joining in the firm of Schlaich\nBergermann and Partner in Stuttgart which specializes in lightweight and long-span\nstructures.\nHe became Managing Director of the firm in 2002\, which has been active in the field of\nrenewable energies for more than 20 years. Systems for solar thermal energy production\nincluding dish-stirling concentrators\, trough collectors and the solar updraft tower were\nsuccessfully developed by the office. \nHis research at TU Berlin concentrates upon active and movable lightweight structures that\ncan adapt to changing boundary conditions. An “intelligent” bridge with damping by artificial\nmuscles or experimental structures that fold away when not needed was built at the TU\nBerlin lab.

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture: Peter Ayres - 'Cool Designs: Engineering at the End of the Earth'
DESCRIPTION:The 2014 Annual Lecture will be given by Peter Ayres from Aecom: \n\n\n\nThe design of facilities in polar regions presents unique challenges in terms of extreme climate\, logistics\, and sustainable remote living. These challenges\, and how they have been overcome through thoughtful\, innovative design\, are discussed with particular reference to the recently completed Halley VI Antarctic Research Station\, winner of the 2013 IStructE Sustainability Award. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter is a senior structural engineering director with AECOM. He has over 25 years experience leading multidisciplinary design teams on innovative projects around the world\, and has the rare distinction of having worked on every continent on earth. He led the AECOM team which won the design competition and delivered the Halley VI Antarctic Station\, the world’s first ever fully relocatable permanently manned Antarctic base. More recently\, he had led engineering teams on major international sports programmes including stadia for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games\, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.
