SUMMARY:Milne Medal Lecture 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Milne Medal is awarded to an individual engineer for excellence in structural design\, both in the overall concept and in the attention to detail in their work\, and is named in recognition of the late Bob Milne\, who served for many years as the Honorary Secretary of the IABSE British Group. \nThis year\, we are delighted to award the Milne Medal to Margaret Cooke of Integral Engineering Design\, who’s lecture “Less is More” will be broadcast online on the 9th November. \nAs we head towards 2050 we need to build less and re-use more. This requires a fundamental shift in how we work\, in the training of engineers\, in clever use of existing buildings\, materials and components. We will also need to change the way we value our work: how do we articulate our worth when no repair or change is necessary? How do we persuade clients that it takes courage and real expertise to say that an existing structure has sufficient integrity? \nMargaret Cooke has been working with existing buildings for nearly 30 years and is Conservation Accredited. She is one of the founding Directors of Integral Engineering Design where the worlds of new build\, conservation\, reuse and sustainability are inextricably linked. She is a passionate advocate of the “minimum intervention” approach to engineering. \nThe lecture will be on Zoom; joining details will be made available closer to the event. SUMMARY:Nethercot Prize 2021
DESCRIPTION:Nethercot Paper Prize\, 2021\nEarly career architects\, engineers\, and designers (expected to be under 35 and based in the UK) are invited to submit a single author paper for judging for the Nethercot Prize. The paper should cover the process of designing a new structure or adapting an old one. The prize is named after Professor David Nethercot\, President of IABSE 2013-2016. \nShortlisted authors will be invited to the IABSE Milne Medal dinner normally held in November each year (pandemic permitting). The winner of the paper competition will be awarded with a contribution of £400 towards participation and travel to an upcoming IABSE international conference\, reimbursed after the attendance of the conference. In light of the current status of in person conferences and events\, this will be available for future events in 2021 or 2022. \nStory telling is a key skill to successfully convey ideas during a project. Excellent quality work can easily be ignored if not accompanied with appropriate communication. This award aims to encourage the written communication skills of the participants and highlight the excellent project work that is carried out by IABSE early career professionals. \nThe judges are not interested on reading papers that focus on selling the outcome of a project. A successful paper in the Nethercot Prize 2021 will engage with the reader; define the key drivers of a project you have been working on; explain the key architectural or structural engineering interventions that have been made; explain what has been your contribution to the project; explain what makes both the project and your contrition remarkable; and especially\, critically analyse what went well and what might have been improved. \n Papers should be limited to 1300 words. Images and figures may be incorporated but the submission must cover no more than five A4 pages at point size 11. \n Judging Criteria\n\nEngagement of the reader\nCommunication of technical content and overall written style\nInsight and understanding of the wider project\nUnderstanding and communication of the impact of our work on the wider community\nCritical reflection on the design process and appropriate identification of lessons learned (positive or negative)\n\nPlease do not assume that basing your paper on the style of previously awarded or shortlisted papers is the appropriate route to follow to succeed in this edition of the Nethercot Prize. \nAuthors are required to confirm with the relevant people (project director or as appropriate) that the subject matter is appropriate for public dissemination. \nSubmission\nSubmit your paper by email to events@iabse.org.uk  \n Programme\n22nd October 2021            EXTENDED Entry deadline (5pm)\n22nd to 31st October         Judging\n1st November                    Shortlist announced\n9th November                   Awards announced at Milne Medal lecture \nPlease note that success in this competition will not lead directly to your paper being accepted for presentation at an IABSE Symposium.

SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture 2019 and Thames Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis Year’s IABSE Annual Lecture is a special one; we’ll firstly be treated to a Lecture by Guy Nordenson\, entitled “What We Do”\, followed by dinner aboard a boat on the Thames! \n“What We Do”\, Guy Nordenson \n“This then is the engineer’s principal destructive weakness\, to play Iago to the architect\, or indeed to another engineer\, Othello.” – Peter Rice 1992 \nThe role of the structural engineer today bears similarities to that diagnosed by Peter Rice near the end of his far too brief career\, but it has also changed. Since the early 1990s with the emergence of the World Wide Web and the digital transformation of work and play\, we have seen engineers from Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg disrupt commerce and culture. \nThese are today’s equivalents of the Victorian entrepreneur-engineers Isambard Brunel and Gustave Eiffel. \nThe necessary adaptation of our planet to the changing climate – regardless of even the most radical future mitigation measures – will require physical transformations comparable in scale to the recent digital revolution\, and the earlier Industrial Revolution. It is clear that engineers will need to play a leading role in that adaptation revolution\, and not that of Iago or Othello. \nGuy Nordenson is a structural engineer and professor at Princeton University. Recent projects include the Kimbell Art Museum\, the Menil Drawing Center and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Since 2008 he has led research projects on coastal resilience and climate adaptation and co-written three books on the subject: On the Water|Palisade Bay (2010)\, Structures of Coastal Resilience (2018) and Four Corridors (2019). Nordenson has co-curated exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art including “Tall Building” (2004) and “Rising Currents” (2010) and published Tall Buildings (2003)\, The Felix Candela Lectures (MoMA 2008) and Structured Lineages: Learning from Japanese Structural Design (2019). He was awarded the AIA’s Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement Award\, was Bernoudy Fellow at the American Academy in Rome and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 2006 to 2015 he was Commissioner of the NYC Public Design Commission and is a currently member of the NYC Panel on Climate Change. \nAfterwards\, for those that would like to\, we’ll be boarding a private boat at Westminster Pier. The trip is kindly sponsored by Trimble\, and we’ll be having dinner\, drinks and\, taking in the sites of the Thames. We’ll also be having informal (and quick!) talks on some of London’s bridges as we pass underneath. For those that can’t make the lecture\, feel free to buy a ticket just for the boat\, and meet us at the pier. \nThe three-hour cruise includes dinner\, drinks\, and should provide plenty of opportunity for networking\, discussion and catching up with friends and colleagues. \nThe timetable looks like this: \n5.30pm – Lecture by Guy Nordenson @ IStructE\, (NOTE EARLIER START!) \n7.00pm – Depart IStructE (transport provided) \n7.45pm – Boat Departs @ Westminster Pier\, ‘City Cruises’ \n11.00pm – Boat Returns to Westminster Pier \nLook forward to seeing you there! \nRegister now on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:IABSE Visits - Clifton Suspension Bridge Tour
DESCRIPTION:The British Group of IABSE is organising an afternoon tour of Clifton Suspension Bridge\, which will be led by the Bridgemaster Trish Johnson and John Rees of COWI. Delegates will learn how the difficult balance of preserving the bridge’s heritage whilst maintaining current functional and maintenance standards has been achieved on this awe-inspiring bridge across the Avon Gorge\, designed by I.K. Brunel and completed in 1864. The visit will proceed from the Visitor Centre on the Leigh Woods side of the bridge\, cross the bridge to the Clifton side and then back to the hidden chambers in the Leigh Woods abutment. \nThe Bridgemaster very rarely conducts tours as a matter of course and only in special circumstances. In leading the tour she will be joined by John Rees\, who is Project Director for COWI’s long-term commission as Engineer to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust. In their capacity as ‘tour guides’ they are able to provide delegates with unique engineering insight that is not available to the public. \nIABSE British Group are grateful to the Bridgemaster Trish Johnson and John Rees of COWI for generously giving their time to act as tour guides for this visit. Further details on the tickets for the visit are available here.

SUMMARY:Adaptable structures - what really is serviceability?
DESCRIPTION:Since 1975\, the British Group of IABSE has held a two day colloquium in Cambridge every summer for about 25 invited participants. The purpose of the event is to exchange views on a structural engineering theme of topical importance. \nThe Institution’s Structural Futures Committee\, in conjunction with the IABSE British Group are hosting a discussion based on the theme of this year’s Henderson Colloquium: ‘Adaptable structures – what really is serviceability?’ The debate will focus on the leading issues raised including monitoring of existing and new structures\, flexible use of structures\, what governs serviceability\, and use of new technologies. \nThe panel will seek to explore how well we understand what governs serviceability\, and whether this should be driving design. Can increased monitoring of existing and new structures provide the data that allows for alterations to these rules? Can modern data analysis techniques allow us to update load factors on a regular or live basis based on current information? Can adaptable structures accommodate varying comfort requirements over a short time frame? How good are we at predicting the future use of our structures? What prospective new technologies are there that may improve serviceability performance? And ultimately\, is there a new family of structures that: \n\nAre designed for the first use load case\nHave a lower embodied energy\, material use and construction cost\nAre designed for flexibility but future use is not pre-judged\nWill be able to accommodate new technologies\, and also contain monitoring to improve the global understanding of performance?\nAre truly adaptable?\n\nThe speakers are: \nDavid Knight\, Director\, Design & Engineering\, Cake Industries\nEd Clark\, Director\, Arup & Chair\, Structural Futures Committee\nNeil Loudon\, Group Manager – Structures Highways England\nWilliam Algaard\, Associate Director\, Arup\nMichal Drewniok\, Research Assistant in Civil Engineering\, University of Cambridge\nIan Firth\, Consultant\, COWI \nFurther details on the event and tickets are available here. \nWatch online \nThis lecture will be livestreamed from 18:00 GMT. To view use the registration button\, selecting registration type ‘watch online’. \nPlease note that currently the livestream is not optimised for mobile/tablet viewing so we strongly recommend you to view via a PC/laptop. \nUnable to watch live? The lecture will be added to the Institution’s YouTube channel after the event. \nPhoto copyright: Charles G. SUMMARY:Milne Medal Lecture 2017
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Roger Ridsdill Smith impressed the judges with the considerable depth and variety in his structural designs\, and the ingenuity and engineering skill which he demonstrated in the example projects he chose to submit. The variety was not only in structural forms and concepts\, but also in structural materials which included a stainless steel canopy at Marseille Vieux Port\, laminated veneer lumber frames of the Maggie’s Centre in Manchester\, cementitious rammed earth walls for the Musée de la Romanité in Narbonne and the steel and concrete structure for the new Tocumen International Airport in Panama. \nRoger said “At Foster + Partners we strive to design structures that are efficient\, that have integrity and that look like nothing else can be removed. I am very honoured to receive this recognition from IABSE.” \nA dinner will be held after the talk at 19:45 at the Modern Pantry\, Clerkenwell. Tickets are limited. \nDinner Discount: If you are an IABSE member\, please use promotional code IABSEDISCOUNT for £5 (35 and under) or £10 (Over 35) off your order. \n \nPowered by Eventbrite
