DESCRIPTION:*** DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 15th OCTOBER***\n \nEarly career architects\, engineers and designers (expected to be under 35 and based in the UK) are invited to submit a single author paper for judging for the Nethercot Prize (Young Professionals Paper Prize named after Professor David Nethercot\, President of IABSE 2013-2016). Shortlisted authors will be invited to the IABSE Milne medal dinner normally held in November each year. The winner of the paper competition will be awarded with a contribution of £400 towards participation and travel to an upcoming IABSE international conference in (reimbursed after the attendance of the conference).\nWhat makes your project interesting and special? Papers should outline a project that you are or have been working on\, define what are the key drivers for the project\, explain the key architectural or structural engineering interventions that have been made\, and take a critical view of the overall success of the project. A successful paper will engage the reader and provide a fascinating insight into the process of designing a new or adapting an old structure.\nPapers should be limited to 1300 words. SUMMARY:IABSE Annual Lecture 2019 and Thames Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis Year’s IABSE Annual Lecture is a special one; we’ll firstly be treated to a Lecture by Guy Nordenson\, entitled “What We Do”\, followed by dinner aboard a boat on the Thames! \n“What We Do”\, Guy Nordenson \n“This then is the engineer’s principal destructive weakness\, to play Iago to the architect\, or indeed to another engineer\, Othello.” – Peter Rice 1992 \nThe role of the structural engineer today bears similarities to that diagnosed by Peter Rice near the end of his far too brief career\, but it has also changed. Since the early 1990s with the emergence of the World Wide Web and the digital transformation of work and play\, we have seen engineers from Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg disrupt commerce and culture. \nThese are today’s equivalents of the Victorian entrepreneur-engineers Isambard Brunel and Gustave Eiffel. \nThe necessary adaptation of our planet to the changing climate – regardless of even the most radical future mitigation measures – will require physical transformations comparable in scale to the recent digital revolution\, and the earlier Industrial Revolution. It is clear that engineers will need to play a leading role in that adaptation revolution\, and not that of Iago or Othello. \nGuy Nordenson is a structural engineer and professor at Princeton University. Recent projects include the Kimbell Art Museum\, the Menil Drawing Center and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Since 2008 he has led research projects on coastal resilience and climate adaptation and co-written three books on the subject: On the Water|Palisade Bay (2010)\, Structures of Coastal Resilience (2018) and Four Corridors (2019). Nordenson has co-curated exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art including “Tall Building” (2004) and “Rising Currents” (2010) and published Tall Buildings (2003)\, The Felix Candela Lectures (MoMA 2008) and Structured Lineages: Learning from Japanese Structural Design (2019). He was awarded the AIA’s Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement Award\, was Bernoudy Fellow at the American Academy in Rome and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 2006 to 2015 he was Commissioner of the NYC Public Design Commission and is a currently member of the NYC Panel on Climate Change. \nAfterwards\, for those that would like to\, we’ll be boarding a private boat at Westminster Pier. The trip is kindly sponsored by Trimble\, and we’ll be having dinner\, drinks and\, taking in the sites of the Thames. We’ll also be having informal (and quick!) talks on some of London’s bridges as we pass underneath. SUMMARY:IABSE Visits - Clifton Suspension Bridge Tour
DESCRIPTION:The British Group of IABSE is organising an afternoon tour of Clifton Suspension Bridge\, which will be led by the Bridgemaster Trish Johnson and John Rees of COWI. Delegates will learn how the difficult balance of preserving the bridge’s heritage whilst maintaining current functional and maintenance standards has been achieved on this awe-inspiring bridge across the Avon Gorge\, designed by I.K. Brunel and completed in 1864. The visit will proceed from the Visitor Centre on the Leigh Woods side of the bridge\, cross the bridge to the Clifton side and then back to the hidden chambers in the Leigh Woods abutment. \nThe Bridgemaster very rarely conducts tours as a matter of course and only in special circumstances. In leading the tour she will be joined by John Rees\, who is Project Director for COWI’s long-term commission as Engineer to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust. In their capacity as ‘tour guides’ they are able to provide delegates with unique engineering insight that is not available to the public. \nIABSE British Group are grateful to the Bridgemaster Trish Johnson and John Rees of COWI for generously giving their time to act as tour guides for this visit. Further details on the tickets for the visit are available here.

SUMMARY:Adaptable structures - what really is serviceability?
DESCRIPTION:Since 1975\, the British Group of IABSE has held a two day colloquium in Cambridge every summer for about 25 invited participants. The purpose of the event is to exchange views on a structural engineering theme of topical importance. \nThe Institution’s Structural Futures Committee\, in conjunction with the IABSE British Group are hosting a discussion based on the theme of this year’s Henderson Colloquium: ‘Adaptable structures – what really is serviceability?’ The debate will focus on the leading issues raised including monitoring of existing and new structures\, flexible use of structures\, what governs serviceability\, and use of new technologies. \nThe panel will seek to explore how well we understand what governs serviceability\, and whether this should be driving design. Can increased monitoring of existing and new structures provide the data that allows for alterations to these rules? Can modern data analysis techniques allow us to update load factors on a regular or live basis based on current information? Can adaptable structures accommodate varying comfort requirements over a short time frame? How good are we at predicting the future use of our structures? What prospective new technologies are there that may improve serviceability performance? The award is named in recognition of the late Bob Milne who served for many years as the Honorary Secretary of the IABSE British Group. \nJohn is the 14th winner of the Milne Medal. DESCRIPTION:This year\, Roger Ridsdill Smith impressed the judges with the considerable depth and variety in his structural designs\, and the ingenuity and engineering skill which he demonstrated in the example projects he chose to submit. The variety was not only in structural forms and concepts\, but also in structural materials which included a stainless steel canopy at Marseille Vieux Port\, laminated veneer lumber frames of the Maggie’s Centre in Manchester\, cementitious rammed earth walls for the Musée de la Romanité in Narbonne and the steel and concrete structure for the new Tocumen International Airport in Panama. \nRoger said “At Foster + Partners we strive to design structures that are efficient\, that have integrity and that look like nothing else can be removed. I am very honoured to receive this recognition from IABSE.” \nA dinner will be held after the talk at 19:45 at the Modern Pantry\, Clerkenwell. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce our next study tour to Madrid (Spain) during the weekend of the 7-8th of October. We will visit some of the most notable buildings and structures in Madrid. We will also visit museums\, walk around the historic centre of the city and taste some Spanish food. \nMore detailed information and registration instructions are available in the link below. The deadline to register is the 30th of June and there is space only for 30 delegates. Owing to the popularity of this type of trips\, we recommend that you register as soon as possible. Note that you can bring guests to the trip; they will also need to register. SUMMARY:IABSE Visits: Ordsall Chord
DESCRIPTION:The Ordsall Chord is a major railway project connecting Manchester’s Victoria and Piccadilly Stations for the first time. Existing historic brick railway viaducts are being widened in concrete\, and a new railway viaduct includes large half-through girder bridges and the UK’s first network arch bridge spanning the River Irwell. Other significant works include a new 50m spine-beam footbridge\, and extensive refurbishment to heritage structures\, including restoration of a Grade I listed masonry arch bridge dating to 1830. The engineering design and construction is geometrically complex and architecturally demanding. \nThe site visit will include all the works mentioned above\, escorted by engineers involved closely in the project’s delivery. Viaduct widening works are substantially complete on site. Hanger installation for the network arch bridge will be ongoing at the time of the visit\, as will be the heritage works. \nAttendees will need to wear full railway PPE (full orange high vis\, safety boots – steel toe cap\, hard hat\, safety glasses\, gloves) as the construction site is live; only limited PPE may be available to borrow. \nAttendees will be sent further meeting details. \nNote\, as visitor numbers are limited\, tickets will be open only to IABSE Members until the 16th April. \n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite
