SUMMARY:IABSE Visits: Ordsall Chord
DESCRIPTION:The Ordsall Chord is a major railway project connecting Manchester’s Victoria and Piccadilly Stations for the first time. Existing historic brick railway viaducts are being widened in concrete\, and a new railway viaduct includes large half-through girder bridges and the UK’s first network arch bridge spanning the River Irwell. Other significant works include a new 50m spine-beam footbridge\, and extensive refurbishment to heritage structures\, including restoration of a Grade I listed masonry arch bridge dating to 1830. The engineering design and construction is geometrically complex and architecturally demanding. \nThe site visit will include all the works mentioned above\, escorted by engineers involved closely in the project’s delivery. Viaduct widening works are substantially complete on site. Hanger installation for the network arch bridge will be ongoing at the time of the visit\, as will be the heritage works. \nAttendees will need to wear full railway PPE (full orange high vis\, safety boots – steel toe cap\, hard hat\, safety glasses\, gloves) as the construction site is live; only limited PPE may be available to borrow. \nAttendees will be sent further meeting details. \nNote\, as visitor numbers are limited\, tickets will be open only to IABSE Members until the 16th April. \n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Digital Design: A seminar to share the outcome of the IABSE Henderson Colloquium 2014
DESCRIPTION:[section bgcolor=”#f9f9f9″ parallax=”true” padding=”10px 0″ border=”1px solid #ffffff”]\nSince 1975 the British Group of IABSE have held a two day colloquium every summer to exchange views on a structural engineering theme of topical importance. This year’s Henderson Colloquium looked at the impact of digital tools and technology in construction. Delegates included leading engineers\, architects\, contractors and academics. \nThe emergence of digital technology has undoubtedly influenced the way we work and the skills that we need to have. It has led to great opportunities in terms of design creativity\, complexity and efficiency. However\, we are faced with daily challenges about how to get the best from these tools. The pace of progress is rapid and leads us to question how the construction industry prepares\, evolves and adapts for an increasingly digital future. \nThe discussions at the colloquium were wide-ranging and covered the following key subject areas:\n– parametric modelling\n– design optimisation\, visualisation\, and documentation\n– design collaboration\n– construction automation\n– the impact of big data and open source design\n– the impact on education\, training and skill development \nThe purpose of this seminar is to share the outcome of the colloquium\, and to debate the key messages and areas for future focus.[/section] \n[section bgcolor=”#ffffff” parallax=”true” padding=”10px 0″ border=”1px solid #ffffff”] \n\n \nSell Tickets Online through Eventbrite\n\n[/section]

SUMMARY:Henderson Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:[section bgcolor=”#ffffff” bgimage=”IMAGEURL” parallax=”true” padding=”20px 0″ border=”0px solid #ececec”] Since 1975 the British Group of IABSE have held a two day colloquium in Cambridge every summer for about 25 invited participants. The purpose of the event is to exchange views on a structural engineering theme of topical importance. Each participant is invited to make a short presentation to trigger constructive discussions in the relaxed surroundings of Christ’s College. \nThe theme of the 2014 colloquium is Digital Design. \nThe digital revolution towards the end of the last century has not only allowed architects to generate ever more free-form geometries\, but has also equipped engineers with tools such as three-dimensional modelling and finite-element analysis which allow them to analyse and design these increasingly complex shapes. Whilst some might argue that these digital tools have enabled new and ambitious design opportunities\, others might feel they have led to a loss of clarity and engineering logic. \nThis year’s Henderson Colloquium is set to look at the impact of digital technologies on the disciplines of engineering and architecture and most importantly their collaboration. It will focus on the use of these tools as part of the creative design phases of a project and the link between design and construction. This cannot be explored in isolation from the documentation and management process\, but the emphasis of discussion is not intended to be around BIM. It will assess how tools such as parametric modelling\, generative processes\, design optimisation\, instant visualisation\, 3D-printing\, additive manufacture and experiential design can all assist communication and inform judgement by the design team. \nThe emergence of this technology has undoubtedly influenced the way engineers work and the skills that they need to have. The potential to automate analysis and design calculations ought to allow engineers to produce more efficient designs\, and to design more efficiently. These tools also challenge the focus of engineering training and education and ultimately lead us to question how the engineering profession prepares\, evolves and adapts for the future.[/section]

SUMMARY:ICE Bridges 2014: Engineering the Future
DESCRIPTION:[section bgcolor=”#f9f9f9″ parallax=”true” padding=”10px 0″ border=”1px solid #ececec”] \n  \n[/section] \n[section bgcolor=”#ffffff” bgimage=”IMAGEURL” parallax=”true” padding=”20px 0″ border=”0px solid #ececec”] IABSE British Group is very pleased to support ICE Bridges 2014.  \nThe UK’s population is set to increase to over 70 million by 2028. Our built environment will need to support this growth and we need ensure that when maintaining critical infrastructure and designing new infrastructure that planning for the future is a priority. \nOur bridges are critical infrastructure and can provide some relief to the network as well as strategic regeneration to an area’s economy.  When a bridge collapses or closes for repairs\, it can cause massive disruption\, and every bridge construction has its own individual challenges that must be taken into consideration at all stages. With events such as the 2013/2014 floods it has never been so important to ensure our bridges can withstand extreme conditions. \nThe Institution of Civil Engineer’s Conference on Bridges will bring together those responsible for the planning\, design\, construction\, safety\, maintenance\, operational and post use of bridges with the wider supply chain.  Enabling discussion and sharing of innovative solutions and best practice case studies that span the life-cycle of a bridge\, and the issues they face today and tomorrow. \nICE have released programme details\, with key topics to include: \n\n Accelerated techniques and technologies to enhance the safety\, quality\, cost and programme delivery\nInnovation in new design\, advances in bridge construction techniques and materials\nEuro codes\, safety standards\, inspection and their impact on bridge engineering\nCase studies from major projects leading the way in structural innovation\n\nRegistration is now open on ice-bridges.com.
