Questions and Answers:
Is there any consideration of the budget/cost of the refurbishment that we propose (and does this factor into the judging criteria)?
Your proposal will not specifically be judged on cost, hence no budget/total cost need be explicitly stated in your submission. This factor will fall under the buildability criteria
Are there any recommended resources for acquiring information on the existing building’s structure (such as floorplans), or are we encouraged to use photographs of the market as references?
You are encouraged to use photographs and any other useful information (archive drawings, Google Streetview etc.) you can find online as reference for your refurbishment scheme.
Are we assuming that the building is not in need of any structural intervention, and therefore the refurbishment is purely aesthetic (save for any structural interventions on behalf of anything proposed in the submission, should they be necessary)?
Yes. There is no need for structural intervention and the refurbishment is aesthetic in nature. However, the construction of new structures (either in addition to or replacing parts of the existing structure) would be in accordance with the brief.
The brief states that ‘the refurbishment could include an overhaul of the building’s function’ – does this mean that should we choose to propose a complete change of use of the building, this would still be in keeping with the brief?
Yes. A change of use of the building would be in keeping with the brief, assuming care is given to the Grade 1 listed part of the structure, which may not be altered. See below sketch for a breakdown of which areas are listed and which are to be retained.
