IABSE British Group
Joining the British Group connects you with like-minded engineers and practitioners across the UK. We operate very much as an engineering club, with members that include many influential figures in the UK structural engineering community, most of whom are also active internationally. This gives you a rare opportunity to network at every level and to build meaningful contacts both at home and abroad.
Experience the Group in person at one of our upcoming events, held throughout the year, including Future of Design conferences, the Milne Medal Lecture and dinner, the Annual Lecture and dinner, the Henderson Colloquium and site visits.

JOINING THE IABSE COMMUNITY
Why join
IABSE?
Whatever your stage of career, if your interest is sharing technical knowledge, learning from international engineering practice, building your network of professional contacts or opening up new opportunities, you will benefit from being part of IABSE. Active membership is widely recognised as an important attribute in the credentials of an engineer or engineering business, and is worth adding to your CV. In some countries, IABSE membership can even unlock opportunities for work because it is seen as a recognised international accreditation by clients and employers.
MEMBERSHIP / INDIVIDUAL
Individual Membership.
Individual membership gives you full access to the British Group’s activities alongside the global IABSE community. You can attend lectures, conferences and visits, contribute to discussions and publications, and connect with engineers across different sectors and countries. Many employers will pay the subscription on behalf of individual members, so it is well worth checking whether this is possible in your case.
If you have a paper accepted at an IABSE international conference, you may be eligible for a British Group grant to support your attendance. Read the grant details and how to apply.
To join as an individual member, apply via the IABSE membership portal and select the British Group as your national group.
MEMBERSHIP / collective
Collective Membership.
Collective Membership is designed for companies and organisations with structural engineering interests that want to engage with IABSE as a body rather than only through individual staff members. As a collective member, your organisation gains increased visibility and access within the worldwide structural engineering community, together with greater exposure to new information, perspectives and professional contacts. This route is particularly well suited to universities, consulting firms, libraries and public authorities who want to support their teams’ involvement in IABSE while signalling their commitment to excellence in structural engineering.

MEMBERSHIP / STUDENT
Student Membership.
Student membership brings IABSE within reach of engineering and architecture students at a substantially reduced cost. Student members are part of the British Group community, can attend our events and receive online access to Structural Engineering International (SEI) and other IABSE resources.
The British Group also sponsors up to 20 final-year students from each UK university, or all final-year students at universities that are collective members of IABSE, by paying their membership or renewal fees (subject to conditions and availability each academic year). This programme helps students experience IABSE and build early links with the profession at no personal cost.
Students can register through the IABSE join page, or contact the British Group Membership Secretary to ask about sponsorship and university schemes.

How to Join.
IABSE membership (individual, student and collective) is applied for via the international IABSE website, with applications and subscription payments handled directly by the IABSE Headquarters in Switzerland. To begin your application, visit the membership portal and select the British Group, or get in touch with our Membership Secretary if you have any questions.
